Marketing role
AI Citation Strategist
An AI visibility analyst that finds the questions where ChatGPT and Perplexity recommend a competitor instead of you — and writes the fix for each page.
Buyers now ask an AI assistant before they ask a search engine. This role works on that gap: it builds the set of prompts your buyers actually ask, reads the answers you collect from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, maps who gets cited and why, then audits your pages and writes a prioritised fix pack — the comparison page you are missing, the FAQ that matches the question, the facts that need to be stated plainly. It measures before it fixes, so you can tell whether anything worked.
Things you could ask for
Written the way you would actually say them. The agent plans the steps itself.
- “Write the 40 prompts a buyer of our product would ask an AI assistant, grouped by intent, in a Google Sheet with a column per platform for the answers.”
- “Here are the answers I collected from four assistants. Score who was cited for each prompt, and list the prompts we lose with the reason the winner wins.”
- “Audit our pricing, comparison and FAQ pages for what an AI answer would need to cite us: plain facts, current dates, matching questions, structured data that matches the page.”
- “Pull our AI-assistant referral traffic from Google Analytics for the last three months and tell me which pages it lands on.”
- “Every month, compare this month’s citation sheet with last month’s and write me a short note on what moved.”
What you get back
A citation scorecard by platform and prompt, a lost-prompt table with the cited competitor and the likely reason, page-by-page audit findings, and a fix pack ordered by expected impact — drafted copy in a Google Doc, not just advice. Monthly rechecks land in the same sheet, so the trend is visible.
Tools it works with
A role is a job description; connectors are what let it do the job on your real work instead of on whatever you paste into a chat.
Where it is the wrong tool
- It cannot ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity for you. There is no connector to those assistants, so you run the prompts and paste the answers into the sheet; it designs the prompt set and does the analysis. Web research through Tavily shows ordinary search results, which are a different thing.
- AI answers are not repeatable. The same prompt can cite different sources an hour later, so treat one run as a sample, run important prompts more than once, and read trends, not single results.
- It improves the odds; it cannot promise a citation. Anyone who guarantees placement in AI answers is selling something.
- It will not plant fake reviews, seed forums with undisclosed promotion or publish pages written only for machines. Those tactics are exactly what the assistants are trained to discount.
Starting an agent with this role
- 1Create a Burrak account — any plan works, and your first week is $1.
- 2In the Marketplace, open the Roles tab, find AI Citation Strategist and choose “Start an agent as AI Citation Strategist”. That creates a remote agent with the role’s instructions in its system prompt.
- 3Connect the tools it needs — Google Sheets, Google Docs, Notion, Tavily Web Search — from Connectors.
- 4Give it a brief. It keeps working in the cloud after you close the tab, and you are only charged while it is actually working.
The AI Citation Strategist role, in practice
- Is this different from SEO?
- It overlaps, and the foundations are the same: AI assistants draw on what search engines index, so a page that is not indexed cannot be cited. What differs is what earns the citation — a plain answer to the exact question, current facts and clear comparisons matter more than ranking signals alone. Use it alongside the SEO Specialist, not instead of it.
- Can it see how much traffic AI assistants send us?
- Yes, if you connect Google Analytics. GA4 reports AI-assistant referrals as their own channel, so the agent can show which pages ChatGPT or Perplexity sends people to and whether those visits convert.
- How long until changes show up in AI answers?
- It varies by assistant: those that search the live web can pick up a changed page within days of it being recrawled, while answers drawn from a model’s training data change only when the model does. That is why the role benchmarks first and rechecks monthly.
