ChatGPT Alternatives in 2026: 8 Options, and Which One Fits Which Job
The best ChatGPT alternatives in 2026, free and paid: Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, Le Chat, Manus, Genspark and Burrak AI, with prices and limits.
ChatGPT is still the default, and for a lot of people it is a perfectly good one. People go looking for an alternative for one of four reasons: the answers are not good enough for a particular kind of work, they want sources they can check, they want it inside the apps they already use, or they are tired of copying the answer somewhere else and doing the rest of the job themselves.
Each of those reasons points to a different product. This list is organised around them rather than ranked, because "best" depends entirely on which problem you have.
How we checked. Prices are US list prices in US dollars, checked on 2 November 2026 against each vendor's own pricing page wherever it was reachable, and against recent reporting where it was not. Where we could not confirm a current price, we say so and link to the vendor instead of guessing. Prices in this market change every few months, so treat any figure here as a starting point. Sources are at the end. We make one of the products on this list, Burrak AI, and we have tried to hold it to the same standard as the others, including where it falls short.

For reference, ChatGPT itself has a free tier and paid plans in the US starting at $8 a month (ChatGPT Go), with Plus at $20.
1. Claude: for writing and long documents
Free plan: yes · Paid: Pro $20/month, or $17/month billed yearly ($200); Max from $100/month
Claude, from Anthropic, is the alternative most people switch to for writing. Its drafts tend to need less editing, it follows a house style well, and it handles long inputs comfortably: whole contracts, reports or a folder of notes. Projects let you keep reference material and instructions together, so you are not re-explaining the same context every time.
Where it falls short: the free tier's usage limits arrive quickly with heavy use, and image generation is not its focus. Like ChatGPT, it is mainly a conversation. The finished text still has to be carried to wherever it is going.
2. Google Gemini: if you live in Google's apps
Free plan: yes · Paid: Google AI plans; the price depends on your country, so check Google's page
Gemini's advantage is where it sits: in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive and on Android phones. If your work already happens in Google Workspace, an assistant that can see your inbox and documents without extra setup is worth more than a slightly better answer in a separate tab. Paid Google AI plans bundle extra cloud storage, which matters if you were paying for that anyway.
Where it falls short: it is at its best inside Google's world and less useful outside it. The plan line-up has changed several times in 2026, which makes it hard to know what you are buying. Check the current page before you subscribe.
3. Microsoft Copilot: if you live in Windows and Office
Free plan: yes, the Copilot app · Paid: Copilot features are bundled into Microsoft 365 consumer plans; business seats are priced separately
Copilot is the obvious choice for people whose working day is Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams. The free app covers everyday chat and search. The value of the paid tiers is Copilot inside the Office documents you are already editing.
Where it falls short: outside Microsoft's apps it is an ordinary chat assistant. Consumer plans changed in late 2025 when the standalone Copilot Pro subscription was folded into Microsoft 365, so older reviews quote prices and plans that no longer exist.
4. Perplexity: for answers you can check
Free plan: yes · Paid: Pro and Max tiers; see Perplexity's pricing page
Perplexity is built around search. Every answer comes with numbered sources, so you can click through and confirm a claim before you rely on it. For research, comparisons, current events and "what does this company charge" questions, that habit of showing its working is the main reason to use it.
Where it falls short: it is less suited to long creative writing or open-ended drafting, and the quality of an answer is only as good as the pages it found. A confident content farm can sit in the results next to a primary source, so the citations still need a look.
5. Mistral Le Chat: a European alternative at a lower price
Free plan: yes · Paid: Pro $14.99/month; Team $24.99 per user per month
Le Chat comes from Mistral, a French company, and it is the best-known European alternative to the American assistants. It is fast, has a usable free tier, and its Pro plan costs less than the $20 most rivals charge. Discounted Pro pricing is offered to verified students.
Where it falls short: fewer integrations and a smaller ecosystem of add-ons than ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot. For most everyday tasks the gap is small, but power users will notice it.
6. Manus: an agent that carries out the whole task
Free plan: yes, 300 credits a day (up to 1,500 a month) · Paid: from $20/month
Manus is a different kind of product. You describe a job, such as "research these ten companies and build me a spreadsheet", and an autonomous agent does it in a cloud computer, browsing, writing files and checking its own work. It also produces slides, images and simple websites. If you are reaching for ChatGPT and then doing the remaining nine steps yourself, Manus is aimed squarely at you.
Where it falls short: it runs only in the cloud, so it cannot touch files on your own computer or anything on a private network. You cannot choose which AI model it uses. Credits on long tasks can go faster than you expect. We compare it with Burrak in detail in Burrak AI vs Manus.
7. Genspark: one workspace for documents, slides, images and video
Free plan: yes, about 100 credits a day · Paid: Plus $24.99/month; Pro $249.99/month
Genspark is the widest product on this list: an AI workspace that writes slides, spreadsheets and documents, makes images and video, can place phone calls for you, and lets you choose between several leading AI models. If you want one subscription that produces many kinds of output, it is hard to beat for breadth.
Where it falls short: breadth means more tools to learn and drive yourself, and the paid plan costs more than most alternatives here. There is more on this in Burrak AI vs Genspark.
8. Burrak AI: an assistant that does the recurring work in your own tools
Free plan: yes, on the web, desktop, iOS and Android apps (pay as you go) · Paid: Pro $9.99/month, with the first week for $1 on any platform
Burrak is our product, so weigh this entry accordingly. It is built for the fourth reason people leave ChatGPT: the answer is not the job. You give an agent a goal in plain English, such as "every Monday, summarise what our competitors announced" or "draft replies to yesterday's customer emails, do not send", and it carries out the work in the tools you connect: Gmail or Outlook, Google Calendar, Sheets, Docs, Notion and others. Agents run in the cloud 24/7, can work on a schedule, remember your preferences between tasks, and notify you on your phone when the work is done. You choose the AI model, from many vendors, per task.
Where it falls short: it is not a better chatbot for a quick question. For that, ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini is quicker and more polished. Its creative range is narrower than Genspark's or Manus's, it does not make phone calls, and it is a far younger product than anything else on this list. The free tier has no monthly credit allowance, so heavier use means topping up or moving to a paid plan.
If that sounds like your problem, the AI email assistant, AI for small business and personal AI assistant pages show the kind of jobs people hand to it.
How to choose
- You mostly ask questions and want better answers: try Claude for writing and Perplexity for research. Both have free tiers, so test them on your own last five questions.
- Your work lives in one company's apps: pick the assistant that lives there, Gemini for Google and Copilot for Microsoft. Integration beats a marginally smarter model.
- You keep copying the answer somewhere else and finishing the job by hand: you want an agent, not a chatbot. Manus and Genspark suit one-off projects and creative output; Burrak suits recurring work inside your own email, calendar and documents. We explain the difference in AI agents vs chatbots.
- Price matters most: every option here has a free tier. Of the paid plans, Burrak Pro ($9.99) and Le Chat Pro ($14.99) cost the least.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free ChatGPT alternative? For everyday questions, the free tiers of Claude, Gemini and Copilot are all good. Which is best depends on whether you value writing quality (Claude) or integration with Google (Gemini) or Microsoft (Copilot). For research with sources, Perplexity's free tier is the strongest.
Is there an AI like ChatGPT that actually does tasks? Yes. That is what AI agents do. Instead of returning text, an agent such as Manus, Genspark or Burrak AI carries out the steps: researching, writing files, sending drafts to your mailbox, updating a spreadsheet. See our guide to what an AI agent is.
Are these alternatives safer for my data than ChatGPT? It varies by product and plan, and business plans generally offer stronger guarantees than free ones. Read each vendor's privacy policy for how your conversations are stored and whether they are used for training, and do not paste anything confidential into a free consumer tier of any of them.
